Therefore, it is believed by some experts that valknut, which is essentially a knot/binding, might have been used by practitioners of seidr with similar intentions. Seidr practices heavily featured imagery and symbols. He could also unbind their minds and provide relief to them by removing fear. According to the belief, Odin had the power to bind people’s minds with his magical powers and make men panic during battle. Odin is known as the chief practitioner of seidr (pronounced as SAY-der), the Norse practice of magic. Valknut, Odin’s Symbol and the Serpent by Mikhail Balashov on Shutterstock Not to mention the fact that many of the artworks featuring valknut were discovered on belongings in ship burial sites and memorial stones, all related to death and the transition from this life to another.Īnother reason for valknut being a popular Odin symbol today is about Odin being the god of magic in Norse mythology. It is because most of the archeological findings featuring the valknut symbol either has Odin himself on them or his animal companions, namely ravens and wolves, which are also considered Odin’s symbols. Odin,in addition to being the god of death, is also known as the god that carried the souls of the dead to the underworld (and back to the world of living sometimes). It was believed in Norse mythology that the warriors who fell in battle would go to Halls of Valhalla in Asgard to live in Odin’s company. Valknut, the Symbol of Odin by Bourbon-88 on Shutterstock The term ‘valknut’ is a compound word in Norwegian language and it simply means ‘the knot of the fallen/slain warriors’ as in ‘the knot of warriors who died in battle’. What the symbol was called at the time of its emergence is also not known. In fact, even the name ‘valknut’ was given to the symbol in the modern era. That said, it still could not be determined to this day how or when the symbol actually emerged. As automatic conversions rarely do it right, each node has been hand tweaked so that the path is intact, compact and above all still retains the character of the original ink drawing.Valknut, the Knot of the Slain by Tata Donets on Shutterstock The scan is converted into a vector file. The pencil markings are then erased and the image is scanned onto the computer. Joining the centres of the circles you can create a triangular grid pattern from which you can draw out the Valknot.Īfter all this has been done by pencil, I colour the lines in with ink and add highlighting thinner lines, very often used in knot work designs to bring out the main pattern. I start by constructing a grid using overlapping circles, around 25 of them, forming the flower of life pattern, a sacred geometrical construct. It would be easy to do it all on the computer, but I believe that then that will show in the end result being too perfect. I wanted to draw my version mathematically, but by hand. For example the quick engraving done onto the Oseberg ship burial bed's post has a mistake. ![]() Valknut transparent background free#The Viking patterns are drawn free form and some of them famously show how tricky the pattern is to draw. It is based on a triangular grid formed onto the flower of life pattern. This image of three interlinked triangles is also known as a Borromean triangle.
